On April 27, CDC announced the availability of an updated Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). The PPSV23 VIS (dated April 24, 2015) does not differ significantly from the previous version, which may be used until stocks are depleted.

THE NATIONAL NURSE ACT of 2015

At the beginning of the 114th Congress, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) and I will re-introduce the National Nurse Act to spring preventive health
forward by designating the Chief Nurse Officer, an existing position in the U.S. Public Health Service,as the National Nurse for Public Health.

This position would provide a publicly visible nurse leader who would collaborate with health care leaders to address health disparities and set goals of better public health.
Advancing Excellence in Long-Term Care Collaborative has partnered with Hallmark to create the You Make A Difference employee recognition program. Now you can acknowledge achievements and milestones easily and systematically—anywhere, anytime. Using the many online resources and the program’s own website, you can:

· Order Hallmark greeting cards and certificates created specifically for
employee recognition.

· Easily add the personal messages that make recognition more meaningful.

· Include a monetary incentive when appropriate.

· Let employees choose their own reward; incentives are redeemed for gift cards from hundreds of major national retailers, restaurants, entertainment and travel providers.

It is coordinated through the Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA), an initiative of AARP, the AARP Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

We are on duty 24/7, and often we can’t even take a break. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. We are the unsung heroes. Here are our stories. We hope you will share yours.

The CDC recommends that all nursing homes take steps to implement antibiotic stewardship activities. They have provided a checklist which nursing home staff can use as a baseline assessment, and periodically thereafter to review progress in expanding stewardship activities on a regular basis (e.g., annually). Over time, facility staff can implement activities for each element in a step-wise fashion. To obtain the checklist for use in your facility, click here: http://www.cdc.gov/longtermcare/pdfs/core-elements-antibiotic-stewardship-checklist.pdf
