American Dietetic Association Becomes Member of the Long Term Care Professional Leadership Council (LTCPLC)

(April 30, 2009) -- The Long Term Care Professional Leadership Council (LTCPLC) has accepted the American Dietetic Association (ADA) as a member of the Council’s Professional and Technical Advisory Group (PTAG). This category of members includes groups whose members serve LTC residents by providing their professional management and clinical perspective on issues before the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee is comprised of associations representing professional disciplines with administrative accountability for the quality of service provided in nursing facilities as per regulatory requirements (42 CFR Part 483 subpart B). ADA joins PTAG members, the Nurse Executive Council for Post Acute Care, and Direct Supply. The American Dietetic Association’s  interest stems from its understanding of practice and regulatory issues facing the food and nutrition components of various Long Term Care facilities. ADA’s members, many of whom serve in such facilities, can provide insight to the LTCPLC.Marianna Grachek, chair of the LTCPLC, noted: “The LTCPLC is now two years old and ready to open its membership to organizations such as ADA. We are pleased to include them and we are sure their considerable knowledge and perspective will assist the council in providing guidance to improve care.”Founded in 1917, the American Dietetic Association is committed to improving the nation’s health and advancing the profession of dietetics through research, education and advocacy. The Association has 50 state dietetic associations, plus affiliates in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the American Overseas Dietetics Association. Most ADA members are registered dietitians, roughly half of whom have advanced academic degrees. ADA members represent a wide range of practice areas and interests including public health; sports nutrition; medical nutrition therapy; diet counseling, cholesterol reduction, diabetes, heart and kidney disease; vegetarianism; food service management, hospitals, restaurants, long-term care facilities and education systems; education of other health care professionals and scientific research.

The Long Term Care Professional Leadership Council (LTCPLC) was formed in 2006 to foster collaboration among the key professions that provide leadership in Long Term Care and have a role mandated by regulation. The LTCPLC Steering Committee is composed of key leadership from ACHCA, AMDA, ASCP, and NADONA. The LTCPLC’s Professional and Technical Advisory Group (PTAG), consists of key industry stakeholders including Clinical Practice Professionals, Ancillary Services Professionals, Product and Service Provider Professionals, and Government and Regulatory Agencies. The PTAG works together with the Steering Committee to create opportunities for dialogue and provide guidance to the industry.
